Autonomous Cars And Their Effect On The Environment

Autonomous Cars And Their Effect On The Environment

In an op-ed article by Allison Arieff, “Cars Are Death Machines. Self-Driving Tech Won’t Change That.” The author is under the impression that all cars are killing machines and that making cars autonomous will not change a thing. In the authors op-ed article, the author explains how we need to stop spending so much money on trying to make cars safer and focus on trying to reduce the number of cars on our roadways.

“So far, I’m unpersuaded. Since 2014, over $80 billion dollars has been spent on “smart” or connected cars and autonomous vehicles, arguably to make cars safer. But investing in the car of the future is investing in the wrong problem. We need to be thinking about how we can create a world with fewercars.”

The author states a good point, the average American produces about 21.8 tons of CO2 emissions each year (McLean). That amount of CO2 is equivalent to 4 average school buses, if everyone on earth produces annually 21.8 tons of CO2 and there are 7 billion people on earth then annually, we would produce 15,558,480,760.4 tons of CO2 a year. That is equivalent to 622,340 average school buses in CO2. The author explains very important facts and discusses how we would be better off without cars. So that brings up the question of what autonomous cars will do for the environment.
